Many people are using AI these days. But in ASME Code fabrication, “AI” stands for Authorized Inspector, a key part of the certification process. The Code requires fabricators to contract with an independent Authorized Inspection Agency in order to stamp code vessels. The Authorized Inspector from that agency must be certified and commissioned by the National Board.
The AI’s role is to verify that the fabricator is meeting all ASME Code requirements and following their written quality control program. Before fabrication starts, the AI reviews the drawings and code calculations, and sets certain inspection hold points. Common hold points are fit-up inspections of certain welds, and internal inspections of all vessel welds. The AI reviews any NDE results such as X-rays and witnesses the hydrostatic pressure test. The Code stamp cannot be applied until all required inspections are complete.
