The ASME code has a limit to the amount of offset permitted between two plate edges that are to be butt-welded together. Excessive misalignment can create stress concentrations and could lead to premature failure. The allowable tolerances are given in Table UW-33, and the amount depends on the joint type and plate thickness. Since Category A joints (longitudinal shell seams) are typically subjected to higher stresses than other joints, the allowable offset is lower. Offsets within the permitted tolerance can be corrected using a 3:1 taper at the edge. If the offset exceeds the allowable limit, the joint must be re-worked prior to welding.
